Information about the Swedish School of Colorado

The purpose of the Swedish School of Colorado is to provide education in Swedish language, history and culture, and to promote mutual understanding and friendship among students. The school is a meeting place for those interested in Swedish culture and provides opportunities for students and parents to interact with others who speak Swedish. Since the start of Swedish School in 2007 we have had around 100 students each semester.

The curriculum focuses on teaching students to speak, listen and understand, read and write in Swedish. Alongside the language instruction the school will introduce Swedish traditions, holidays, cultural events, history, and the Swedish way of life. Our intermediate and advanced classes are held in Swedish as well as our Smultron class. Our beginner classes are held in both English and Swedish.

It is critical for the success of the students’ language skills that Swedish is spoken in the home on an ongoing basis. As a result, only students who have a Swedish-speaking family member should attend the school (Swedish citizenship is not required).

The goal of the school is to further enrich the language skills from home, including grammar studies and pronunciation.

Teachers determine the placement of children into groups according to children’s age and Swedish language skills. Groups are divided by age and language skills:

1) 18 months - 3 years: Smultron I & Smultron II
